Fire destroys historic 1st Camps Bay Scout and Cub Halls
SCOUTS South Africa confirms that the 1st Camps Bay Scout Group’s Cub and Scout halls were destroyed in a fire that broke out during the night of 26–27 August 2025. Founded on the 19th of May 1916, 1st Camps Bay is one of South Africa’s oldest Scout Groups. Over the years, the dedicated volunteers within the Group have inspired, empowered, and supported generations of children through Scouting. The loss of its facilities marks a major blow to a Group rich in legacy and service.
Scout Group Leader Isabell Anders is currently liaising with the various stakeholders and stated: “We are utterly devastated. Everything has been lost — from camping and training equipment to irreplaceable history, including our honours board with names of Springbok Scouts dating back to our early years. We are grateful that the fire did not spread to the surrounding vegetation, in fact only our halls were burned. The fire brigade and police responded promptly, and investigations are ongoing. The fire inspector has advised that a case of burglary and arson can been opened, which we have done”, she explains.
“The authorities have asked us to keep our Scouting families and members of the public away from the site until all official inspections are complete. We are very grateful for the tremendous outpour of love and support from our community and fellow Scout Groups,” Isabell added. “Once we’ve regrouped, we’ll share a list of needs. At this stage, monetary donations are the most helpful until we have found our footing.”
SCOUTS South Africa Chief Executive Officer Wayne du Plessis has a message for the Group and its members. “We are devastated to hear about the fire that destroyed the Scout Halls of 1st Camps Bay Scouts. This Scout Group, known for its quality programmes and service to the community and environment, is run by dedicated volunteers who give their time and expertise to empower and educate young people. We offer them our sincere condolences and full support during this difficult time.”
